Herodium (National Park) Herodium is located south of Jerusalem and east of Bethlehem, on the edge of the Judean Desert.
King Herod built a palace and a fortress between 23 and 15 BCE.
He piled earth around the walls and created an artificial mountain in a shape of a cone.
An aqueduct from Solomon’s Pools near Bethlehem brought water to the palace.
It is the only place he gave his name to, and his tomb was found there lately. That means that Herodium was important to King Herod.
Herodium was a base of the Jewish rebels in the Great Revolt and in the Bar Kokhba Revolt, Jewish fighters dug tunnels in the mountain. Parts of the tunnels are open to visitors today.
